Luxembourg City is home to one of Europe’s most dramatically situated old towns, perched above the deep gorges of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers. The historic fortifications, which earned the city its UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1994, date back to the 10th century and include a remarkable network of underground tunnels known as the Casemates du Bock. Accessible by a series of steep paths, lifts and winding lanes from the upper city, this riverside quarter is home to charming cafés, traditional restaurants, the beautiful Abbey of Neumunster and a peaceful atmosphere that feels a world away from the bustle above. An evening stroll along the Alzette River as the old town lights up overhead is one of Luxembourg’s most memorable experiences.

Luxembourg’s culinary tradition reflects its position at the meeting point of French, German and Belgian cultures, resulting in a food scene that is refined, hearty and deeply satisfying. Sample traditional dishes such as Judd mat Gaardebounen, a smoked collar of pork with broad beans, or Féiselen, a type of smoked sausage, alongside excellent local cheeses and freshly baked bread. The Moselle Valley in the south is Luxembourg’s wine-producing heartland, known for its crisp Rieslings, sparkling Crémant and fruity Pinot Gris.
